COASTAL & UK SWIMS
T
Working from Dover North towards Ramsgate, the Thames eastuary and the Eastern Coastline of the UK:
There are possible swims (in both ditedtions) for the local ones which are usually between Dover - ST Margarets Bay - Kingsown - Deal, Ramsgate and the Goodwins sands area.
There are also many swim points and locations on the Thames between London through to Margate and on ther Esat coast shoreline. It is a long list with a big variety of different possible swims and combinations, like 2-way swims - or - a swim section in a triathlon (Isle of Sheppy to Southend). that can be completed without leaving UK waters or having to consider travel restrictions and passport control etc. now the UK has left the EU.
These swims are all planned within the tidal patterns and worked over the local tidal periods.
The chart to the right is the Coastal swim course outline for swims between St Margarets Bay and Ramsgate - or Ramsgate to St Margarets Bay. 1-way is about 10.5 nautical miles & a 2-way (there and back) is about 21 nautical miles. This swim is a tidally assisted swim and ideal as a training swim for the English Channel crossing.
The Dover /Ramsgate swims can start from Ramsgate or Dover Harbour's Eastern arm -but usually the Dover start is from the St Margrets Bay area as there are tidal anomalies along the shoreline between Dover and St Margarets - The tidal flow in this area tends to go back on its self and runs twards Dover for around 10 / 11 hours in a tidal cycle.
This does make the Ramsgate to Dover swim a bit easier if you want to cover the distance.
The lenght of the shoreline from Kingsdown to Deal or on to Sandown (or the other way around ) is a good coastal training swim that can be easily set into the tidal flow.
Deal to Ramsgate - or Ramsgate to Deal - or a 2-way version of this swim is a good Channel training exercise or another swim for your record books if you have the time and the inclination.
St Margrets to Ramsgate - or Ramsgate to St Margarets - (or a 2-way) is a tidally assisted swim rather than a swim across the tide like a Channel swim but it will still a good exoeriance that will teach swimmers a lot about the conditions they could find on a Channel crossing.
If you want to do a Thames estuary swim talk to us, we know our way around in this area too and can organise swims, if you are up to the challange, across the estuary to the Essex and Esat coast.
